Après la mort de sa femme, Tom Gerrin un menuiser de 75 ans à la retraite, retourne vivre chez un de ses fils. Il est traité comme un invalide par ses enfants qui veillent sur lui en permanence. C'est alors qu'il fait la rencontre de Leane Bossert une jeune étudiante qui part en Californie retrouver ses parents. Tom décide donc de partir avec elle afin de rejoindre Véronica, son premier amour. S'en suit un périple qui va rapprocher ces deux personnes que tout oppose.
